Do you have a T-mobile G1 and don’t want the over price data >?? How about you have a g1 wihtout data and can’t send or rec. picture messages >?? well looking no more here is the setup needed to have this work.
I have the G1 without the data plan, and everything works fine with no problems.
The only thing I did have a problem with is MMS, but I got around it by going with the settings I used on my old unlocked HTC 8125:
Menu > Setting > Wireless controls > Mobile networks > Access point names
Once you get in there, scroll down until you see T-Mobile US and input the following settings:
NOTE!!! DO NOT CREATE A NEW APN, YOU MUST USE THE Tmobile US APN for this to work
Name = T-Mobile US
APN = wap.voicestream.com
Proxy = 216.155.165.050
Port= 8080
Username= None
Password = None (delete the 4 digit PW that is there)
Server = Not set (also delete the 1 digit PW there)
MMSC = Unchanged (do not change it)
MMS proxy = 216.155.165.050
MMS port = 8080
MCC, MNC, and APN type all stay they was they are.
Now as far as remembering the old information goes, you can always go into T-Mobile US 160 (right below T-Mobile US), which has all the same settings as T-Mobile US including the password. All you have to do is copy and paste it.
How do you copy and paste? To do this let’s say you go into T-Mobile US and where it says “Name.” Click it and the edit box will pop up; hold your finger on the name, and then another box will pop up; click “Copy all” (this is only going to copy what is in that box). To paste, you go wherever you want to paste it and do the same steps.
You can also check out this blog where I post at for other answers and questions you might have..Please read through the blog before asking any questions as there might already be a answer for you Here.
Also If you have a unlocked g1 on At&t network Here is a setup for you to use. Please if anyone uses these setup post and let everyone how it works out for you..Also if you have any problems or questions.
Ok so first follow the steps I listed above to get into the Apn and go the the Tmobile US as I also listed above in my tmobile setup.
Name: AT&T
APN: wap.cingular
proxy: none
port: none
username: wap@cingulargprs.com
password: CINGULAR1 (case sensitive)
Server: none
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 310 (Do not change it if yours is different)
MNC: 410 (do not change it if yours is different)
APN Type: none
Now as far as i know the “MNC” is location sensitive, from reading on other sites the MNC is usually just 41 on the east coast and 410 near the northwest region (not sure on any of this it’s all trial and error)
turn phone off then back on again and you should be able to send/receive mms messages
You can put this in my last message if you like LOL.
i tested outgoing/incoming calls, voicemail, outgoing/incoming sms/mms, android market, gmaps, and browser, all worked AMAZING

Thanks for starting this collection. I’m sure it’ll get more and more useful as we find out more about the Android platform. You could also review apps and services related to WiFi-only usage.

@D, I answered your question on InportB, Did you use my settings I have listed here ? If not you must apply that to your G1, and it should work.
If you Hard Reset you g1 (mean factory reset) then you will need a data sim card to get it going again. If you Soft Reset (Power off the phone) you will be fine.

I have the G1 without data plan and the only only problem I am having is the picture messaging.
I have applied the above setting and restarted my G1, but picture messaging still not working. Is there something I am missing? Please help..Thanks!

This is a bit more detailed. Hopefully someone can help me. I am an avid AIM user.
Let me explain my situation first. I have a G1 and I removed the data plan that comes along with the G1. That means I don’t have the internet access unless I use WiFi.
Now if I don’t have WiFi on, I cannot sign on AIM. Does that mean AIM on the G1 needs internet connection. Because on my Motorola W490, it did not require internet connection to sign on.
Another question I have is why when my phone goes to sleep when I haven’t been using a for a few minutes, my phone loses WiFi connection. That means even though I am signed on AIM, I would be automatically signed off AIM when my phone goes to sleep since it loses the WiFi connection. This means my friends can’t IM me even when i put my phone in my pocket for a while since I lost the WiFi connection. I remember this didn’t happen on my old phone. I could sign on AIM and receive messages anytime even without internet connection on my old phone. Is there a way to prevent it from losing WiFi connection even though it is asleep?
February 8, 2009 at 4:18 am
@Jacking, I don’t know about the AIM not working while on wifi that has always stumped me, I also answered this question on the other website, http://www.inportb.com, My wifes old razor can sign onto aim on the same wap APN but it won’t do it on these newer devices for some reason.
As for the sleeping part of your phone, well yeah I know it sucks, but it you have unlimited text messages then set up your AIM on your PC to go to you mobile when your not signed in. That is what I do and it works great.
when you phone goes into sleep mode it cuts off any app that is going to eat the battery. but you can also set the phone to never sleep in your phone settings.
I will try to research the AIM issue as I never really cared about it because I just set up my aim account to come to my cell when I’m not signed on.
If I can find anything I will let you know.
February 8, 2009 at 5:27 am
I think you heard me wrong on the first question. When my wifi is NOT on I can’t sign on AIM and an error message pops up which I have said in the previous post. So does that mean just signing in to AIM will require some type of internet connection, in my case wifi. If so, then why did my old phone allow me to sign on AIM without any internet connection?
February 8, 2009 at 7:35 am
No I got what you said I just miss typed,
What I meant to say was “I don’t know why it doesn’t work with wifi off”
I have always had the newer model phones, but I chose not to have over priced data services.
My wife don’t really care about her phone so she like just to have a basic phone with out the the little gadgets.
Anyways, like your older motorola w490 she has always been able to sign on to aim without any problems, but as for me once I change the APN on my phones I can never do so. Why ? I have no clue and never looked into because Like I said I just set up My aim to come right to my phone as Text message when I’m not on it.
So I really don’t have a answer for your problem at this time. If I find something I will post it.
UPDATE When I try to sign onto AIM on my phone while NOT connected to wifi, this is what I get, Unable to sign in to AIM service. Please try again later. (Detail: Sorry, The phone number cannot be read from your sim card. Please contact your operator for help.)
I am tired right now so sometime tomorrow I will call Tmo and see what I get out this error. But beings I’m on a g1 without data, I know they are just going to tell me I have to have data service for it to work. So I will have to argue with them a little bit and see what I can fight out of them.
I will keep you posted. And if you are using my setup I have listed you should be getting the same error.
February 8, 2009 at 1:54 pm
Actually I did not follow your setup I’m sorry to say. I used Tmo data plan for a day and cancelled. So instead the message I get is “Unable to sign into AIM services. Please try again later. (Error code 302) ”
Lol I understand. Get some rest. I find it useless to call Tmo about this. They will just say you don’t have a data plan and might even leave a bad note on your account. Well take your timme trying to solve the problem. I understand you get a lot of questions about the G1 w/o data from what I see on the other site. You are Dave right?
February 8, 2009 at 2:24 pm
@Jackie, yes I am Dave, and when I call tmo they don’t say anything about me using the G1 without data. Actually, they think it is interesting and ask for feedback on how it works.
you don’t use text messages on your g1 ? If you do you might want to try my setup.
I have ran the g1 with and without data and I must say it runs way smoother on my setup. And your MMS will work on that setup.
February 8, 2009 at 2:30 pm
I do use texts with their unlimited plan. The thing is I heard that there is going to be a Cupcake update that will allow us to send MMS. If Ilm wrong. Please correct me. Also if I follow your setup what exactly am I changing on my phone?
Oh yea. Did tmo help you out in the AIM situation?
February 8, 2009 at 3:10 pm
I have not called them yet.
February 8, 2009 at 3:15 pm
your going to be able to do MMS, if you do not have data service this is the only way you can do MMS with the G1. And cupcake my not be out for a long long time.
there is a new update out right now but it’s not the cupcake, it has a few cool new features. If you haven’t got it yet you can update it your self
http://g1withoutdata.wordpress.com/2009/02/07/dont-want-to-wait-for-the-new-rc-33-update/
And the cupcake feature is not going to do anything for MMS on a g1 without data, you will have to use the setup listed here to do so.
February 8, 2009 at 3:35 pm
I’m looking at my settings for T-Mobile US and I see my APN is epc.tmobile.com but yours is different. However, you also said “MCC, MNC, and APN type all stay they was they are.”
I see that the other Not sets on some of the other options suchs as MMS proxy and MMS port before the setup is like this “”. It has those arrow symbols next to it. Should I do the same with the Password or just type “Not set” without the symbols?
I hate how we can’t update our posts. I am sorry if I am trafficking your blog. Regarding the questions I had about the setup, if it says “none”, are you expecting me to type in “None”? This question applies to “Not set” as well.
About your setup:
Where it says “None”, I leave the field blank?
Where it says “Not set”, I leave the field blank?
Where it says “Unchanged” I don’t do anything to the field?
February 8, 2009 at 7:09 pm
Ok, for any of them that say None, Just delete the current and it will say none when finished. so…
Username – This Should alread say None
Password – click on it and delete what ever is there
Server – Click on it and delete what ever is there
Once you delete them this is what you should see.
User name – This should already say None
Password – Not set
Server – Not set
And as for any that say Unchanged, yes you are correct, do not do anything to them leave them as they are.
PS- I merged your last few post all together.
February 8, 2009 at 8:31 pm
Ok so I just got off the phone with a tmo g1 tech, Here is the deal…half of this may not make any since to you..LOL
The g1 is setup to run a gprs as to like your older phone and my wifes razor they run on GSM.
So aim is not going to work on g1 without data service at this time but I’m am going to talk to a few programmers and see if they can take a AIM app from a older phone and re-write it to work on the Android platform.
This can work if I can get the right person to do it. But finding the right person can be hard to do.
So at this time your best bet is to either set up AIM to be forward to your g1 when your not signed in, or get the data service is you want to have it all the time.
I will keep you posted.
February 8, 2009 at 8:50 pm
Thank. I followed your setup and my MMS is working fantastically! I wonder what MMS.stands for. Anyways, I took your advice and forwarded all my IMs when I am offline to my G1. Thanks a lot for your help.
I was wondering if anyone noticed this about the RC33 build. Before this new build, I had 25 mb phone memory but after that I noticed I had 37 mb. Is it just me or did we get more memory.
February 8, 2009 at 9:05 pm
MMS stands for multimedia messaging service, See now you can enjoy your g1 a little bit more.
I just emailed the team that made Hello AIM and requested them to make a GSM AIM app for the none data users. So keep your fingers crossed!!!.
February 8, 2009 at 9:36 pm
Hey Dave, I have input all the info you have provided into my G1 and reset the phone however; the MMS messaging still does not work!
I was hoping if you had the time that you could help me troubleshoot the problem. Thank you very much!
February 8, 2009 at 9:48 pm
Ok well just make sure, you didn’t create a New APN and you edited the Tmobile US APN, and double check all you settings, and also Please make not that this setup is A US setup only.
I see you posted on Inportb, If you haven’t read through all the post please make sure you do as there maybe something there you could have left out or something.
you can Click Here for a direct link back to that site.
it is kinda hard for me to answer these questions without the phone be in front of me or Not getting a detailed post on what the phone is doing and not doing. i.e like the Edge icon appears and seems to be trying to work, my phone is not able to send or recieve any kind of messages. Something like that could maybe help me out a little bit better.
But Please everyone, make sure you read through the post on inportB (the link I gave in the post) there might be a answer and some trouble shooting tips that can help you there.
February 8, 2009 at 10:01 pm
Okay, I am a jackass, sorry for wasting your time Dave. It just took awhile for it to send and receive I suppose. =P I sent a picture to my sister who is also on tmobile and it was sent and I also received a picture from her phone. I’m hoping now that I can send to AT&T and other phone services.
February 8, 2009 at 10:06 pm
you can send to any1. glad it is working for ya!
February 8, 2009 at 10:08 pm
Thank you so much!
February 12, 2009 at 1:04 am
Ok. I wanted to switch back my settings back to original to test something out because while I am at this school and try to use their WiFi, it seems I cannot log into AIM. I want to try switching it back to original settings but I can’t copy and paste the password. The only options it has when I click on it is “Select All” or “Paste”, if I pasted something before. So how do I switch back to original settings?
February 26, 2009 at 5:54 pm
Ok, I’ve Done All Your Steps… But It Has Come To My Attention That I Cant Access The Apps? Or I Can’t Go Onto The Market Place… Is This Suppose To Be Like That..
And Is There A Wait Time On Mms? Within Last 20Minutes I’ve Had Numerous People Send Pics With None Yet
February 26, 2009 at 6:27 pm
Ok, I’m Getting MMS, Real Slow… But Another Question About The Apps… None of The Apps Work.. The Market Doesnt Work…. Is There A Way To Get The Apps To Work Or..?

February 26, 2009 at 10:39 pm

March 1, 2009 at 4:55 pm
Hello All,
Is there any way to get yahoo email on the go without the data plan
March 1, 2009 at 5:13 pm
Peter, I have no clue I haven’t looked into this.
April 3, 2009 at 5:01 am
all right, i have a question dave, buying a g1 tomorrow from tmobile, and i dont want data
how do i do it so i can still call people and do everything else? because all the other sites i checked says phone won’t call do you have like a full walkthrough? thx
April 3, 2009 at 3:56 pm
@anh, you will need to have data to get the phone going, you only need it for the first setup part.
So if your not on flex pay you can add the data service, just to get the phone going and then cancel it. you will only be charged less the $1 if it use it for one day.
once you get through the first setup you will be good to go with using the phone service and wifi (wifi for market and web browsing)
if you want to use text messages and picture messaging then you will need to use the setup I have listed here.
April 22, 2009 at 12:41 am
Hey Dave let me start by saying awesome job and thanks for all the info you have here. Great stuff!
I just bought my girlfriend her own G1 cuz she loved mine so much
. She is on her parents t-mobile family plan with no data. So I used all your settings on my own G1 just to make sure all worked. Everything works great but gmail auto syncs even without wifi access. I am afraid this might cause data usage charges.
So my question is what are your sync settings for gmail, contacts and calender?
P.S. My yahoo Email also syncs up without wifi
Thanks so much
April 22, 2009 at 1:18 am
Johnny B, I no longer have the G1 and don’t remember the proper commands to get to the sync apps, however, tmobile can’t charge you for a service you don’t have and even of they did you can call and throw a fit and they will clear it up, but please remember they CAN NOT CHARGE FOR A SERVICE YOU DON’T HAVE!
check out this link for alot more info on using a G1 with out data should be alot of answers to questions you may have.
